Intelliverse Launches Support for Reliable Fax over IP for SMBs
Hosted SMB VoIP service deploys T.38 technology to greatly improve the quality of sending faxes
Atlanta, GA – December 5, 2006 – Intelliverse today announced that Talking Planet Business, its hosted VoIP service, now supports the ITU T.38 standard for sending faxes across IP networks. Using Intelliverse, service providers can now offer their small and medium business (SMB) customers quality fax transmissions. Its T.38 technology sends faxes in real-time with the correction techniques that allow sensitive fax machines to hold a connection even during times of packet loss.

With VoIP, voice communications are turned into packets and sent across a data network. Missing packets are common on the Internet, but a minimal amount of packet loss is not audible to a human ear when they occur during a voice conversation. However, dropped packets are especially detrimental to fax communications, because a "blip" may cause sessions to have errors, or even to fail.
The job of T.38 is to fool the terminal into thinking that it's communicating directly with another T.38 terminal. Spoofing techniques are used to correct network delays while fax-aware buffer-management techniques are used to correct missing or delayed packets. This greatly improves the reliability and quality of faxing using VoIP services, which are especially important for service providers offering a complete VoIP solution to SMBs.
